Activity

Provide Feedback

* * *

This exercise is designed to help you practice providing non-positive feedback to another person using supportive communication. The exercise must be completed with a person you know reasonably well—a spouse, close colleague, or friend.

Read the following questions and write down your answer to each as it applies to your partner. Be as accurate, direct, and straightforward as you can in your written response.

1. Here is what I admire about you.

2. Here is what I consider to be your greatest strengths and unique capabilities.

3. If you are to achieve your maximum potential, here is what I think you need to improve.

Using your written answers as notes or reminders, provide this information verbally to your partner. Address each of the items separately.

After you have finished, ask your partner to answer the following questions about your communication. (In order for your partner to be able to accurately rate your communication, you may need to explain each of these dimensions to him or her. Teaching your partner about the principles of supportive communication is an effective way to learn and practice it yourself.) Ask for feedback about the extent to which you were effective in utilizing supportive communication. Use the following response scale: 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = neither disagree nor agree, 4 = agree, 5 = strongly agree.

1. Used inquiry (asked questions) as much as advocacy (made declarations).
